The municipalities of Elgin County were originally recognized as being a part of Middlesex County, but broke off in September 1853. Oxford County is an area based largely on agriculture, with many of its townships being home to major farming operations — especially dairy. While originally formed in 1798, this historic region has since become a hub for many automakers, including Toyota and Cami General Motors, helping to boost job opportunities for its population of 121,781 (2021 census). Huron County is another coastal area of Southwestern Ontario, bordering the shore of Lake Huron — the county’s namesake. While it’s a relatively small county in terms of population, with a reported 61,366 as per the 2021 census, this largely agricultural area is comprised of a mix of villages and popular beachfront towns. Perth County is a farming community, through and through. Formed in 1853, this area has become a hub for mixed farming, as well as both dairy farms and pork production. As one of the smallest counties in Southwestern Ontario, this community of 38,066 (2021 census) is hardworking, industrious, and close-knit. Norfolk County, even as far as coastal regions go, boasts some of the most fertile land in Ontario. Even as the recognized center of the Ontario tobacco belt, this area is known for its diverse farming, with a few small cities scattered throughout the region and a population of 73,015 (2021 census). As one of two counties in Southwestern Ontario that border the United States, Lambton County is the county of both work and play for its population of 128,154 (2021 census). Chatham-Kent is a historically significant area of Southwestern Ontario, as its proximity to the United States helped make it a “terminus” of the Underground Railroad. In recent years, the area has become a hub for the agricultural, automotive, and energy industries, supplying work for its diverse population of 103,988, as per the 2021 census.
